Sarel van Staden (South Africa) has been a professional photographer for more than two decades and has been winning awards for as many years. Sarel developed the “Focused Defused Lighting” technique (FDL) to create fine art of cars. The signature look of the FDL technique is the matt finish it creates on the surfaces of the cars.
Sarel's desire to create fine art images of cars, is in part fuelled by the technical challenges associated with automotive photography, but mostly by a love for car designs. He uses his understanding of light to reveal the beauty hidden in the shapes, curves and lines.
“Great photography is often the result of the ability to see, as well as a solid understanding of the characteristics of light. Light can become the proverbial paintbrush to create works of art”, says Sarel.
